The Center for Architecture and CONSTRUCTO present EXTRA-ORDINARY: New Practices in Chilean Architecture

Exhibition will feature works by 15 Chilean architects, including a dedicated gallery of original work by acclaimed architect Smiljan Radic.

NEW YORK, New York, June 15, 2016 – The Center for Architecture, in collaboration with CONSTRUCTO, will present the exhibition EXTRA-ORDINARY: New Practices in Chilean Architecture, opening on Wednesday, June 22 at 5:30 pm, curated by CONSTRUCTO founders Jeannette Plaut and Marcelo Sarovic. The opening will begin with a roundtable discussion between Plaut, Sarovic and MoMA Director Glenn Lowry and will be followed by a presentation by architect Smiljan Radic.

The rise to international prominence of Alejandro Aravena through the 2016 Pritzker Prize and his curatorship of the 2016 Venice Architectural Biennale has brought attention to Chilean architects. Following the cultural blackout of the military regime in the 1970s and 80s, the recent decades have seen the revival of the local Modern movement’s sensibility and vocabulary of the 1960s. New programs and practices in Chile are enhanced by the emergence of globalized design tools and communication.

EXTRA-ORDINARY investigates the current state of Chilean architecture by presenting recently completed projects by 15 Chilean architects, including the winners of YAP_CONSTRUCTO, an initiative founded in 2010 affiliated with MoMA’s Young Architects Program. The exhibition showcases photography, schematic drawings, ephemera, and video interviews with the Chilean design community. The lower level will be dedicated to the work of acclaimed architect Smiljan Radic and will feature a model of a recent project, Death at Home, and 28 original drawings.

EXTRA-ORDINARY is part of a long tradition of exhibiting international architecture at the Center for Architecture, from Colombia Transformed/Architecture=Politics to City of Mirages: Baghdad, 1952-1982 and Berlin – New York Dialogues, among others,” said Benjamin Prosky, AIANY and Center for Architecture Executive Director. “We are proud to debut this exhibition on contemporary Chilean architecture, featuring the work of creative, globally influential designers who have emerged over the past few decades.”

About the Center for Architecture
The Center for Architecture is the premier cultural venue for architecture and the built environment in New York City, informed by the complexity of the City’s urban fabric and in dialogue with the global community. The Center shares a home with the AIA New York Chapter and has the unique advantage of drawing upon the ideas and experiences of practicing architects to produce thought-provoking exhibitions, informative public programs, and quality design education experiences for K-12 students. It also leads New York City’s annual month-long architecture and design festival, Archtober. The Center for Architecture’s aim is to further public knowledge about New York City architecture and architects, foster exchange and collaboration among members of the design, development, building, scholarly, and policy sectors, and inspire new ideas about the role of design in communities by presenting contemporary and practical issues in architecture and urbanism to a general audience.
